The Mohawk Group @ Greenbuild '09

The adage is right—it does take a village, not only to raise a child, but also to build a healthier world in which we, and our children, can live, work and play. We at The Mohawk Group, and at our parent company Mohawk Industries, recognize that true sustainability is a journey of small environmentally and socially conscious steps that ultimately make a big—and positive—impact. And we also recognize that no one can make the trip alone.

This past year, Mohawk has much to be proud of: the company was ranked among the top 500 "Green Companies" by Newsweek magazine, achieved several third-party "green" certifications, donated products to help rebuild communities in New Orleans and Greensburg, Kansas, and contributed to LEED® Platinum and Gold projects across the U.S., including the new USGBC headquarters. But we couldn't have reached these major milestones without the support and commitment from our entire organization, our customers or our industry partners.

Sustainability is about much more than simply manufacturing eco-friendly products. From maximizing efficiency and resource savings in the design process to partnering with like-minded, sustainability-driven organizations and vendors, we are making a difference in the lives—and on the floors—of our customers while continuing to reduce our environmental footprint.

Join us at our Greenbuild booth #3357 to learn more about what we're doing today (and who we're doing it with)—and what we're working toward for tomorrow. We'll also be "tweeting" live from Phoenix throughout Greenbuild. Follow us on Twitter, and be sure to connect with Mohawk on Facebook and LinkedIn, too. Together, we can make an impact.

Sustainability Spotlight
From spotlighting our sustainability mission in IndustryWeek's November cover story and securing a place among America's top environmental corporations in Newsweek's inaugural "Green Rankings," to speaking up—and out—on various influential sustainability forums, our efforts are being noticed and our voice is being heard.
LEEDing Roles
With more than 35,000 projects comprising over 5.6 billion square feet of space in 50 states and 91 countries, USGBC's LEED® environmental rating system continues to drive the "green" bar on building standards around the world higher than ever. From the USGBC's new headquarters and New Orleans' Holy Cross rebuilding project in the Lower 9th Ward, Mohawk's flooring and carpeting solutions are helping to "LEED" the way to a more sustainable future.
Certified Sustainable with NSF 140
The "gold" standard for sustainable commercial carpeting is now higher—and "greener"—than ever before. The majority of The Mohawk Group's tufted broadloom, carpet tile and woven product platforms from our three brands —Karastan, Lees and Bigelow—have achieved Platinum and Gold-level certification under the new national Sustainable Carpet Assessment Standard NSF 140-2007, the industry's sustainability benchmark for ensuring environmentally and socially responsible carpeting products.
Investing in Renewable Energy One kWh at a Time
Mohawk's commitment to environmental responsibility is growing—and our footprint is shrinking. To further our sustainability efforts, the company recently invested in renewable energy credits (RECs), which offset the electricity use throughout all of our facilities. We have purchased 12 million kWh (kilowatts) of RECs from Renewable Choice Energy, helping to save more than 15 million lbs. of CO2 annually.
A Partnership for Sustainability with LOMAX
Mohawk recognizes that when it comes to sustainability, we'll achieve more together than we will alone. In support of this partnership mantra, Mohawk expands its alliance with Dow Chemical Company, the innovator of LOMAX Technology latex backing, to include Bigelow commercial carpeting. LOMAX uses captured landfill methane gas as fuel to reduce emissions and fossil fuel use, further minimizing the carpet industry's environmental impact.
