Mohawk Industries Recognized as Charter Member of Save Energy Now

Company Pledges to Reduce Energy Intensity 25% Over 10 Years

WASHINGTON, DC (December 2, 2009)— Mohawk Industries was recognized in a ceremony today as a charter member of the Department of Energy's Save Energy Now Program. Mohawk has voluntarily pledged to reduce its energy intensity use by 25% over the next decade.

Save Energy Now is a national initiative to drive a 25% reduction in industrial energy intensity in ten years. This initiative is sponsored by the Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) within the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) to reinforce energy efficiency as a profitable business model and expand markets for new energy technology. ITP is working in partnership with other federal agencies, companies, associations, suppliers, states, utilities, and universities to enhance industry outreach and access to resources.

Senior Department of Energy officials and members of Congress participated in the Capitol Hill ceremony, which recognized a select number of companies as charter members.

"We are proud to be part of this program, and to work with the DOE to find ways to make our company—and others—more efficient and more competitive," said Bill Kilbride, Mohawk's Chief Sustainability Officer.

The Save Energy Now pledge program is designed to encourage and recognize U.S. companies that are in the vanguard of energy efficiency and are "raising the bar" for all industrial facilities by establishing and achieving ambitious energy goals. Companies that sign the agreement to work toward the energy reduction target will receive priority access to selected DOE resources and national recognition for their commitment and progress.

It is estimated that the program could reduce industrial energy consumption by more than five quadrillion BTUs.
